Ride to Ooty

The year was 1998. I was a young and ambitious – read Fighter pilot in the Air Force. Inspired by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department brochure I found in my guardian’s house, I told my friends my wish to speed travel through all the hill stations of Tamil Nadu. My friend and classmate Ranjit Ranjith disapprovingly replied with a smile – “For that you will need a Maruti Esteem”.

Please help this boy fix a puncture

It was March. Hot and dry. Me and two friends were on a mission to walk to all the four towers of Kempe Gowda – the founder of Bangalore. We had been to three towers and were on our way to the last one – Kempambudhi lake near Chamarajpet. In the alley we ran into this little dirty dude.

He was speechless, motionless. Perhaps too stunned to see me very eager to photograph him. I don’t know his story. Perhaps he lives in the slum with his family. But he’s got what I really wanted but didn’t have when I was his age – a bmx bike! Even after a lot of asking, begging.
